Multiplesclerosis(MS)isoneofthemostfrequentdisordersofthecentralnervoussystem.Excitotoxicityaswellasoxidativestressarepartofthepathogenesis,inaccordancetootherneurologicaldiseases.Thecystine/glutamateantiporterorsystemxc-,withxCTasspecificsubunit,importscystineinexchangeforglutamateandcanassuchaffectintracellularantioxidantaswellasextracellularglutamatelevels.OxidativestressinducestheexpressionofxCTandcouldconsequentlyaggravateexcitotoxicdamage.Increasedactivityofsystemxc-resultsinprotectionagainstoxidativestress,butatthesametimegivesrisetotoxicextracellularglutamateconcentrations.Withthisprojectweaimatunveilingtheroleofsystemxc-inthepathogenesisofMS.
