In a crowdsourcing experiment, we asked lay speakers of Dutch in The Netherlands and Belgium, how they would express that somebody should sit down and feel comfortable. It turned out many speakers from The Netherlands used the phrase "ga lekker zitten", where "lekker" is used in a sense beyond the normal meaning "delicious", but as a modal particle, which expresses the attitude of the speaker. In this article, we describe the changing meaning of "lekker" through time, using corpus material, and discuss language variation between Dutch in The Netherlands and Flanders based on the results of our crowdsourcing experiments.
