The chapter first provides an overview of the historical and legal development of the EU's trade policy and its formulation in the Treaty of Lisbon. Thereafter, particular attention is paid to the EU's buildup of a system of preferential trade agreements with countries around the globe. In this context, trade policy is seen as part of foreign policy.
