This project, presented by three laboratories of the Institute of Molecular Biology, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (i.e.Plantengenetica, Plantenfysiologie, Scheikunde der Proteffien) concerns a structure-function analysis of specific aspects of the metabolism in plants and E. coli which require in the three cases the use of an amino acid analyser. In plants, the main project concerns the study of the gene-enzyme relationship that regulate the biosynthesis of aspartate-derived amino acids by a combined genetical, molecular and biochemical approach. A second subproject will evaluate the influence of mineral nutrition on secondary metabolites such as alkaloids which are synthetised from various precursor amino acids. Finally, the third different proteins, in particular adhesines. Their amino acid constitution as well as their C-terminal sequence will be established and peptide maps obtained from different strains will be compared as basis specifically modify residues essential in the recognition process between adhesine and receptors situated the intestine cell membranes.
