Description

This project will investigate how for the future new, powerful Location Based Services (LBS) can be developed for nautical and terrestrial navigation (inland shipping, road transport and pedestrian navigation). The improvement of the localisation of mobile agents is essential hereto. The new satellite systems (e.g. GPS-III and Galileo) will provide sufficient accuracy and accessibility to cover the needs of inland shipping and road transportation, but mobile agents moving in cities will still face fix problems (urban canyon and indoor navigation), so that integration and fusing of other sensor systems becomes compulsory (mobile cell based location estimation, localisation in hotspot areas, fused motion sensors etc.
The research will first investigate the accuracy limits of the localisation of mobile agents in fusing different technologies (improvement of dead reckoning). Next, focus will be put on the communication facilities which are required for LBS and will study server based communication in wireless mobile communication networks (4G). The most appropriate architecture will be investigated to allow application controlled handover triggers in function of the available networks (GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, CDMA, WiFi, WiMax,...). The results will allow to propose the type of LBS which can be deployed for inland shipping (including River Information Systems), for mobile agents in cars or pedestrians (indoor navigation).
