Description

Cancer immunotherapy is considered to be a major breakthrough that revolutionized cancer research in the last decade. Consequently, their discoverers, James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo, wereawarded the Nobel prize for Medicine in 2018. Immunotherapy relies on mobilizing our immune system to attack and destroy cancer cells thatcan generate lasting responses and even result in curing patients with advanced metastatic cancers. Until a few years ago, there was no hope for such patients. However, only a limited percentage of patients respondsto immunotherapy. One of the possible underlying reasons is the immunosuppressive microenvironment in tumors. My research program aims to unravel the immune (suppressive)tumor compartment and the mechanisms thereof to provide a basis for the development of a new generation of immunotherapiesfor cancer.
