Description

The sustainable development of a city appears to be a very complex matter in view of the large number of factors playing a role in its management. These factors, determining the quality of urban life, can essentially be defined in terms of their contribution to the following four major aspects : ecological, economical, social aspects and aspects of eenvironmental planning. These basic components cannot be considered separately, which increases even more the complexity of the problem.
To improve the quality of urban life and to keep the city livable at long date, requires adequate policies which should constantly be adapted to the occurring situation. The purpose of this project is to investigate this complex structure in a general manner, using the appropriate methodology, in order to propose structural and long-term policies. The methodology developed at the CSOO/VUB: 'Adaptive Control Methodology' (ACM), based on system dynamics and multicriteria analysis, seems to be a suitable instrument to tackle such a problem.
