Lars Breuls holds a Master’s degree in Criminology (Vrije Universiteit Brussel, 2015). His research interests include practices of prison sentence implementation, the release of foreign national prisoners, and immigration detention. He holds a Ph.D. fellowship of the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and is currently preparing a doctoral thesis with the provisional title “The point of (no) return? An ethnographic study of forced removal practices in immigration detention centres” (October 2016 – September 2020). Prior to obtaining the Ph.D. fellowship, he was already working as a researcher at the Criminology Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on the study of decision-making processes with regard to recall to prison of conditionally released offenders (October 2015 – September 2016).
