  3. Developing a circular economy innovation framework for ports

Van Den Driessche, E. & Haezendonck, E., 25 Jun 2019, Today, most large port hubs include the circular economy transformation challenge, besides smart digitalization and Internet of Things (IoT), in their strategic priorities. Some seaports even express the ambition to become maritime circular hotspots. However, many ports do not seem to have progressed beyond incremental and small-scale sustainable innovations or the support of rather fragmented ‘sustainability’ initiatives. Based on recent strategy documents of ports, on a literature study and on in-depth interviews with port executives, a framework for systems innovation for ports is developed, to support port authorities in their circular transition and to help them out of the linear lock-in..
