Expertise

Birgit Van Puymbroeck is Assistant Professor in literature in English and research methodology at VUB (80%) and postdoctoral research fellow of the FWO at Ghent University (20%). She received her PhD in 2012 from Ghent University and has held visiting fellowships at Yale University, Queen Mary University of London and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh. She is the co-founder of 20cc at Ghent University and a member of CLIC at VUB.  

Birgit Van Puymbroeck works on various aspects of late nineteenth-century and twentieth-century Anglophone and Francophone literature and culture, with an emphasis on modernism, transnational relations, and media (especially periodicals and radio). Her first monograph, Modernist Literature and European Identity, was published by Routledge in 2020. In addition, her work has been published in international peer-reviewed journals such as PMLA, Modern Language ReviewVictorian Periodicals Review, and the Journal of European Periodical Studies, as well as in edited volumes published by Bloomsbury, Palgrave, and Academia Press. She is co-editor of Afterlives of the Brontës, a special issue of Brontë Studies (co-edited with Marysa Demoor and Olivia Malfait) and former editor-in-chief of DiGeSt: Journal of Diversity and Gender Studies. At present, she is working on a monograph, provisionally titled “Bardic Traditions on Air: Modernism, Radio and Celtic Revivalism,” and co-editing the Edinburgh Companion to First World War Periodicals (with Marysa Demoor and Cedric Van Dijck).

Her expertise includes modernism, network theory, periodical studies, print culture, radio studies, and sound studies. She is open to receiving requests for PhD and MA supervision in her field of expertise. Finally, she is a member of the interdisciplinary 'Writing 1900' network, of the editorial board of DiGeSt: Journal of Diversity and Gender Studies, and of the Young Academy of Flanders.
