Organisation profile

Rheumatology Consultation serves to diagnose and treat patients suffering from diseases marked by an inflammation of the joints, such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and the group of Spondyloarthritis diseases (Ankylosing Spondylitis or Bechterew’s Disease, psoriatic Arthritis…) (prof. L. Verbruggen).
Systemic diseases such as Scleroderma and Systemic Lupus are treated as necessary in conjunction with colleagues from Internal Medicine and Dermatology.
Attention is paid to metabolic bone diseases, in particular Osteoporosis (dr. Van Laere).
This disease may also be addressed through other specialties, such as Endocrinology, Gynaecology and Geriatrics.
The Rheumatology consultation also covers the diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of Arthritis and various injuries of tendons, ligaments, bursae and muscles surrounding the joint. It also addresses diseases caused by crystals (such as gout, or Chondrocalcinosis).  In the occasionally very complex case of Lumbalgia, Rheumatologists and Physical Medicine Specialists can contribute to a differential diagnosis and the overall treatment of the problems, if necessary in cooperation with the physicians in the Pain Clinic, Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics.
