Organisation profile

In the research unit KIER specific and selected musculo-skeletal mechanisms are investigated. Isokinetical testing is at the present the most objective and reliable method to measure the force production of different muscle groups in the upper and lower limbs. Results of this research are used in setting-up or adjusting training programs for top athletes, program rehabilitation models for patients and are used as additional information to objectify injuries for insurance purposes. The research group is also studying the electric activity of the human muscles (ElectroMyoGraphy (EMG)). Interpretation of these results can lead to training advises for athletes in different sports (the research group is particularly specialised in cycling and skiing). In ergonomy the results of EMG studies are used to determine which movements, which postures and which tools/equipment is allowing for the most optimal muscle activity (low muscle activity, with a maximum effect).
